MeiMei and her dance

   

MeiMei is a professional Chinese dance performer, choreographer as well as a qualified and experienced Chinese dance and music teacher. She started dance from as early as she remembers. Without any teachers in her childhood in the countryside of China, she still danced all the time possible. She started to receive dance training from the age of 11 and started to perform regularly from 15. At the age of 18, she won the first prize of solo dance competition of Xuzhou city where she received 5 years training to become a dance and music teacher.

She has performed different styles of oriental dance frequently in this country as well as when she was in China, including twice for China Central Television (CCTV).

She is currently doing a masters course at SOAS, University of London, majoring in East Asian Music Performance. She has been composing music for her own dances, and she is working on making her dances with the music she composed for a project entitled Dance Television.

She has taken her enthusiastic style of teaching to classes in the Edinburgh Chinese Community School as well as to many British children throughout primary schools in Glasgow and Edinburgh on a project with the Dance House, Glasgow.

Her Educational work experiences:

 

For three years in Scotland before summer 2005, she had been:

 

q       Teaching Chinese dance and the Chinese instrument zheng weekly to students at the Chinese community school in Edinburgh.

 

q       Running Chinese dance or music work shops for different organisations and schools in Scotland. For instance, for a project that organised by the Dance House in Glasgow, I had the chance to run Chinese dance work shops in about 40 primary schools around Glasgow.

 

q       Teaching Chinese dance in primary and secondary schools weekly around Edinburgh.
