Sun Zhuo

Sun Zhuo, a professional Chinese Zheng zitherist was born in Xi’an, China and started to learn to play the zither in her childhood. She was taught by her mother Qu Yun, a famous representative of the Qin Zither and a well-known zitherist with deep understanding of the core and essence the Qin Zither.

In 1988, Zhuo was admitted to the affiliated Middle School of Xi’an Conservatory, learning from the young zitherist Yin Qun. She showed her talent in middle school and won first prize for folk music three times consecutively (the award is granted every other year). In 1989 she won third prize of the Juvenile Group of the international Competition of Chinese Musical Instruments.

In 1994 she was admitted to the National Music Department of the Central Conservatory in Beijing, majoring in zither, supervised by the famous zither educationalist Professor Li Meng. In 1997 she won first prize in the Youth Group of the National Zither Invitation Contest and the Fucheng Xian scholarship from the Central Conservatory.

In 1998, with her mother, she held her first solo concert in Hong Kong, which turned out to be a big success. In December 1998 she held another successful solo concert in Central Conservatory. In July 2000 she won the third prize in the Millennium Zither Contest held in Taiwan. In May 2001 her solo concert in Beijing Concert Hall was a big success to huge acclamation. She was recognised as a “great, talented young zitherist” and “the new generation Qin Zitherist” on the cover page of the Music Life and the Music Weekly.

In July 2001 she was granted a degree of Master of Arts after successful graduation debates on her dissertation “On the History and Revitalization of The Qin Zither.” In 2003, together with her mother Qu Yun, she successfully held the “Qu Yun, Sun Zhuo solo Concert” in Tianhan Theatre of Changsha. Her solo performance was shown on the Chinese Central Television music channel as well as the International Channel, and she has published a series of CD and VCD albums:
